About the event

Programming is fast becoming a necessary skill, next to reading, writing, and arithmetic. Kids today grow up surrounded by technology and intuitively understand technology. But when it comes to teaching the underlying concepts, we in Minnesota are surprisingly, among the worst in the nation.

Given my computer science background, I've been thinking of ways to get kids excited about coding early.  I believe, that learning to code and engaging in programming, instills the ideas of logical thinking, reasoning, problem-solving, and creativity that will come in handy, no matter what they do later in life!

Our first coding session in Fall of 23 was a lot fun.

With that in mind, I'm offering once-a-week after-school Coding Club. We will use various block programming platforms.

Individual walk-ins are welcome.

Each evening we will do something different to engage kids in using coding to accomplish different tasks. At any given session we may work on :

1. project

2. Typing skills

3. Mechanical computer - Turing Tumble

4. Solve a physical maze or have a dance party using coding principles

5. Program in Scratch

6. Program a micro:bit

and so on...

Each session is different and does not need to be done in a sequence. The goal is to explore computer science in a fun and engaging way!

* Students need to bring Laptops or tablets capable of running Scratch in a browser.

* Students will also need an email ID in order to set up an account with Scratch

Instructor Rima Parikh has an MS in Computer Science and ~30 years of software development experience in various industries. Currently,  Owner of The Thinking Spot, Rima would like to use her coding skills to get the next generation excited and prepared for the Tech world of tomorrow!
