NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • A brilliant exploration of freedom-what it is, how it's been misunderstood, and why it's our only chance for survival-by the acclaimed Yale historian and author of the #1 New York Times bestseller On Tyranny

"A rigorous and visionary argument . . . Buy or borrow this book, read it, take it to heart."-The Guardian

  • NEW AFTERWORD: Snyder has contributed a new afterword for the paperback, reflecting on President Trump's re-election and its implications for freedom-for Americans and Ukrainians alike.
  • SNYDER'S BESTSELLING HARDCOVER: In its first six months, On Freedom has sold over twice as many copies across formats as his previous books: 91k compared to 37k (Road to Unfreedom) and 29k (Black Earth).
  • MORE URGENT THAN EVER: Readers have been turning to Snyder's books in the wake of the 2024 election. Along with On Tyranny (which we're re-issuing in hardcover in May '25, due to demand), On Freedom continues to sell steadily, as many of the book's key themes-democracy, Ukraine, oligarchy, and bodily autonomy-are even more important with President Trump back in office.
  • ENGAGED AND GROWING FOLLOWING: Snyder has over 949k followers across social media networks (561k X, 306k Substack, 50k Youtube, 32k Facebook), and his platform is growing fast. (He had just 96k Substack subscribers when On Freedom came out in hardcover.)
  • MEDIA GO-TO: Snyder has appeared on national television in over a dozen countries. In Fall '24 alone, he appeared on MSNBC (Last Word with Lawrence O'Donnell and the Rachel Maddow Show), WNYC, and WBUR (On Point), and his work was published or cited in The New York Times, The New Yorker, Bloomberg Businessweek, and The Boston Globe.
